Since the founding of the Philippine Society of Nephrology, the nephrologists in the Visayas and Mindanao formed a single chapter, the PSN Visayas-Mindanao Chapter. However, because of the inexorable increase in number of fledgling nephrologists, new chapters must be formed. So in 2005, kidney specialists from Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, Negros Oriental (mainly Dumaguete) and Samar organized a new chapter: the PSN – Central and Eastern Visayas Chapter with D. Ofelia Buot as the founding president. Her term was succeeded by Dr. Vivina Chiu (2005-2012), Dr. Cesar Quiza (2012-2015) and Dr. Alexander Tan Jr. (2015 – present). The chapter was officially registered and recognized by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2019.
Currently, the PSN-CEV family has 66 adult nephrologists. Included in the membership are six (6) pediatric nephrologists, 5 practicing in Cebu and 1 in Leyte-Samar area. The PSN – CEV Chapter boasts of three training institutions for Adult Nephrology. In 1995, Perpetual Succor Hospital opened the first fellowship program in nephrology. Chong Hua Hospital followed suit and opened its Adult Nephrology Fellowship in 2009. Last year, Cebu Doctors University Hospital broke ground for another training center in Adult Nephrology.
Currently, the chapterserves the community with approximately 67 hemodialysis centers, combined numbers of hospital based and free standing units. The units are located in Dumaguete City and San Carlos City for Negros Oriental; Cebu City, Mandaue City, Talisay City, Minglanilla and Naga for Cebu province; Tagbilaran City in Bohol; Ormoc-Baybay-Maasin-Tacloban in Leyte and in Samar.
