The PSN – Western Visayas Chapter was formed on the geographical basis of the Philippine’s division into regions. However, in 2015, the chapter was split into two: the WV – Panay Chapter and WV Negros Occidental Chapter after the latter met the requisite requirements for nephrologists. Currently, the chapter covers the entirety of Panay island only, as patients from Guimaras have to take the 15-minute ferry to Iloilo for their renal needs. There are currently no dialysis services in the island province.
There are 30 nephrologists serving in the community, 24 are adult nephrologists while the remaining six are pediatric nephrologists. The majority of the nephrologists have their practice in Iloilo City, all six pediatric nephrologists and 24 adult specialists. The remaining seven are found throughout the other provinces, three in Roxas, Capiz, two in Aklan, and two are based in Antique. Most of the Adult Nephrologists are fellows (15), two are diplomates, and seven are board eligible. Pediatric nephrology has the following demographic: two fellows, three diplomates, one board eligible.
The chapter has a lone Peritoneal Dialysis Center in St. Paul’s Hospital. There are 29 hemodialysis units scattered all throughout the chapter, but more in Iloilo City, with nine hospital-based kidney units, and seven free-standing units. Passi City has just recently opened its first hemodialysis service, a free-standing hemodialysis unit in the center of the city. The province of Antique has three: one hospital-based, two free-standing units in a hospital setting, Roxas City in Capiz has five hospital-based HDU’s and one freestanding renal center while all three of Aklan’s HDU’s are in- hospital units.
