In time for the 50th Founding Year of the Philippine Society of Nephrology and 24 years from the creation of the subspecialty board of Pediatric Nephrology in 1998 under the presidency of Dr. Myrna Rosel, the Fellowship Training Program Accreditation Board (FTPAB) releases the 2022 Pediatric Nephrology Training Manual to guide training programs, trainers and trainees in standardizing pediatric nephrology training in the country.
Adapting an outcome based curriculum which is aligned with the mission-vision statement of the society and the mother societies the Philippine Pediatric Society and the Philippine Society of Nephrology, a concept map illustrating the entry level of the trainee, the processes and factors which will impact training and the characteristics of the graduate will be the gist of the map. We envision a globally engaged and connected pediatric nephrologist who is ethical and competent. This can be achieved by an innovative curriculum which promotes renal health, one that is preventive, curative and rehabilitative at the same time and utilizing new knowledge by creating and adopting research innovations and discoveries. The process of achieving the core outcomes takes into serious consideration the various stakeholders from the individual and their families as well as the community. To bring renal health into fruition, availability of health resources, taking into account sociological and political factors as well as intersocietal relations has to be assimilated as contributing factors in the achievement of outcomes.
Embracing the challenges of the times need a core faculty of dedicated and ingenious nephrologists who will make training fun and experiential, relevant and unique adapting to the kind of learners and trainees we have as we welcome Generation Z in our programs. For at the end of the day, our only aim is to ensure pediatric kidney health for every Filipino child.
